Defeat in the humidity.

Sassco squeezed ten players onto the Beacon of Light pitch for a charity fixture against Men Together Chester‑le‑Street.

For Sassco the start couldn’t have been worse. A goal conceded practically from kick off, meant we were up against it. However, a long range blammer, hit by Gary Thomas, smashed into the net to put Sassco back in it. It was after this that a couple of defensive lapses handed Men Together the momentum, turning the game around and pushing ahead.

As the humidity kicked in, Sassco legs went heavy. Men Together kept pressing and stretched the scoreline to 5–1, looking comfortable.

Credit to Sassco — the heads didn’t drop. A sharp spell late on saw two quick goals:

  • Gary Thomas added his second of the night
  • Graeme Bruce grabbed one on his debut

Suddenly it was 5–3, and Sassco were the ones finishing stronger, but time ran out before a full comeback could take shape.

Five players made their Sassco debuts:

  • Anthony Laidler
  • Andar Laidler
  • Callam Unsworth
  • Paul Brown
  • Graeme Bruce

They were joined by previous players returning after a long spell away:

  • Gary Thomas
  • John Harper
  • Aidan Low

The usual suspects were:

  • Kevin Southerton
  • Michael Davison
  • David Grundy
  • Davinder Sangha

After pitch costs, Men Together Chester‑le‑Street raised £200 for their local charity — a solid result from a well‑spirited game.
