Heading along the Danube.

After stumbling through Vienna, eventually gaining a good, competitive win. Retirement was contemplated before Budapest came calling along the Danube.

We are looking to head to Hungary in June 2027. We’ve already made contact with an organiser there and there should be direct flights, but this will be confirmed in October / November.

Budapest’s history begins with ancient Celtic and Roman settlements, later shaped by medieval kingdoms, Ottoman occupation, and the Austro‑Hungarian era, before the unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda in 1873, along the Danube, which created the modern capital.

Football has been woven into Budapest’s identity since the late 19th century, with the city’s clubs dominating Hungarian football for more than a century. Seven Budapest teams have collectively won over 100 league titles, led by giants such as Ferencváros, MTK, Újpest, Honvéd, and Vasas.

The city also produced global legends like Ferenc Puskás (the “Galloping Major”), whose Golden Team revolutionised world football with their famous double victory over England in 1953.

However, Sassco are focusing more on Trevor Brooking’s 1981 goal which saw the ball stuck in the stanchion, giving Ron Greenwood’s Army a vital 3-1 win in Budapest.
